Should You Do Your Own Videos? Maybe, But First You Need to Consider…

Creating your own video is a process that involves planning. Your message. Your shot list to support that message. Methods of delivering that message in a clear and concise way to your viewers. The list goes on and on.

Below is a list of things to consider prior to making your own video that will help you deliver a strong message.

Pre-production Planning:

It is important to define the purpose or what you want to accomplish with the video and who you want to reach with your message. Start with a few goals and some creative ideas of how to convey your message that will engage your viewers. It’s okay to keep it simple and straight forward. Too many creative ideas can cloud your message.

Create a 2-column script with the spoken dialogue in the right column. In the left column make note of all the visuals needed. In the left column list scenes, on-camera talent, text graphics and any other visuals as they appear in time with the audio dialogue. Keep the visuals aligned with the spoken dailogue horizontally so that the timing of the visuals is clear in the script.

Think about the added sounds like music or sound effects required to enhance the video and list them in the left-hand column as well. Add visual text graphics in the left column that you would like to include to help support your message.

Pre-planning your sound design helps to create the feeling or vibe that you want the viewer to experience.

Equipment Considerations:

The camera you use will be determined by your budget. You can use anything from your mobile device to a high-end professional-grade model. Just remember if your using your mobile device that you should record your message with the phone horizontally. When recording your subject, varying your shot composition occasionally keeps it more visual interesting with your viewers and if planned properly you can leave space for text graphics to support your message.

Lighting is particularly important to having good quality video. You may not need lights if you’re in a well-lit area but always keep in mind that the main light source should come from behind the camera. If you’re not shooting outside you want to consider using lights to make sure that your subject is lit properly. Good lighting keeps your environment looking natural so that your viewers remain focused on your message. Having good lighting and good sound keeps your viewers from being distracted by the poor quality which helps them to focus more on your message.

A nice background is also important to making your video look natural. Shooting your subject on a subtle background adds depth to your video and if it’s not distracting it helps your subject to stand out.

Good audio is critical for keeping your viewers engaged and focused on your message. External microphones are often needed for your audio to sound natural. The quality of your audio is extremely important so that your message comes through nice and clear. The two things people will notice the most about your video is the lighting and the sound.

Editing Software allows you to put your video together with the greatest amount of flexibility. It also allows you to add in cover shots and text graphics to help support your message. The cut-aways help add visual interest to your video and are an important part in keeping your viewers engaged. Editing software also allows you to add music which keeps the video moving with good energy and if mixed correctly can create a positive emotional response with you viewers

Branding your Video:

Branding is also very important. You want your viewers to remember and identity with your brand so that your organization remains fresh in their mind. Incorporating your logo and/or your slogan with the video helps them to remember your organization.

Uploading your Video:

Uploading your video is important for you to reach your target audience. If you have properly identified your audience in your pre-planning, then you’ll know prior to making your video the best platforms for featuring your video.
